O Tempora, O Mores:

Half of Americans are on drugs, 1/3 binge drink, 15% smoke, 1/3 have STD's (and thus must be promiscuous), half play the lottery (and are thus foolishly gambling in many other ways no doubt as well), 1/3 have tattoos, 1/3 are obese (3/4 are overweight), 1/2 are or will eventually be divorced, at least 1/3 commit adultery/cheat on their boyfriend/girlfriend/whatever, 1/3 have been arrested for crimes, 1/2 of children are bastards, etc.

Any social rot indicator you can think of, it's redolent.  It's eye-rolling levels of ridiculousness.  How can a people, a society, a civilization, sustain itself with these kinds of numbers?

Luckily for us, a lot of these numbers overlap.  So the binge drinkers are the criminals, are the druggies, are the obese, are the bastards, are the cheaters, are the divorced, etc, etc.  They're just failures at everything in life and screw up everything possible about their lives.  These total fuck-ups are a complete deadweight to society, but they're easily carried by various welfare and make-work services because technology has made most people redundant anyway.

When only 1% of the population is necessary for all basic resource gathering, and perhaps another 10% for manufacturing of basic goods, you can afford to just throw half the population away without another care.

South Africa still limps along despite 90% of its population being totally unproductive.  This shows that we haven't yet reached the technological upper limit of totally useless people whom we can support alongside ourselves.

For all we know 99% of society can be total fuck-ups and things will still roll along smoothly.  So long as a few billionaires keep control of vast automated factories that churn out everything, what's to stop us?

So it may be true that a country can survive its fools and even its scoundrels.  But is it moral to keep sustaining these people?

Why should the productive, virtuous, good people of a country have to put up with these untermenschen?  Why should tax dollars go to their upkeep?  Why do they get to vote?  Shouldn't all the well-behaved people separate themselves from the never do wells not just for their own sake (Atlas must shrug or it will collapse under the weight of the world's burdens), but for the sake of Utility?

These people are born into suffering, suffer all their lives, and then die suffering.  What is the use in them?  Why are we subsidizing their birth and upkeep?  Wouldn't it be better if they never existed?

All life is sacred, human dignity, blah blah.  Sure.  But do these people qualify for those statements?  They've already shown themselves to lack any noble impulses.  They live like pigs or worse.  I'm sure many animals are much more moral than they behave.  So the question is, what right do they have to go on living -- much less living in our midst and off our dime?

The very fact that they cannot cope with life is displayed by their reliance on drugs, alcohol, and other chemical rushes to get through their day.  Since they're basically advertising daily their own desire to be free of this world, why doesn't someone just mass euthanize them already?

Why do we tolerate all this rot?  Is it fine so long as it happens down the street?  So long as your kids get into Harvard?  Whether you see them or not, their sins are still piling up all around you, relying on your money to keep growing.  You're still responsible for their continued existence.

Why can't all the decent people in the country get together and declare independence from all the indecent ones?  Just give them half the country and tell them to go rot in their own fecal matter, and take the other half and mandate actual moral behavior for once and for all?  And if people can't live up to these newly enforced standards, exile them to moral rot land.  All the effort of good people should be dedicated to improving the quality of life of other good people, as a reward for being good.  90% of it shouldn't be going to scumbags.  So why are we content with such ludicrous statistics?

Are good people just so powerful, so well off, that they're bored with improving their own lives and want to take on the challenge of the ever-growing evil masses?

Do they have no further goals of their own?  No aspirations?  Nothing they care about, so why not let all the money and time and political power go to the drunkards?

I always felt like there was so much left for good people to do.  We should be on the path to interstellar civilization, godhood, remaking reality into a virtual reality utopia, creating tight knit loving families who will act as friends for life, becoming immortal (at least until we actually want to die), inventing artificial intelligence that surpasses us in every way, consuming all the best art in the world and then producing more when we run out of what's already here, finding the answers to all our scientific questions, like why everything is the way it is and how it all works.  I'm bursting with goals I wish I could achieve, the simplest being the 100 anime series on my wishlist getting animated instead of suffering the ignominy of their current situations.  Give me billions of dollars and I would apply them to endless world changing projects and goals.  Trillions wouldn't suffice.  Quadrillions wouldn't suffice.  I would just up my wishes and demand we settle Saturn's moons next.

So why have the rich, capable, intelligent, and conscientious just seemingly grown tired of it all?  They're just throwing it all away on schweinhunds.  They don't even want their own money, their own work, their own anything anymore.  Do they want anything at all?  Have well behaved humans just evolved into soulless, autonomous machines of production at some point, and I'm the only real well behaved human left that still possesses desire, will, purpose?

We're in a bizarre situation Ayn Rand never could have predicted.  She warned people that society would just crumble apart if socialism took hold.  That basic services would cease working, like transportation, food, water, electricity.  That's not going to happen, though.  No matter how stupid, indolent, and criminal the population becomes, technology can just keep improving even faster.  Everything can be done by machines and the smart people who program them, forever.  Anything you throw at the rich and famous, they'll counter with some new awesome invention.  Crops can be made to photosynthesize more efficiently.  CRISPR can weed out all genetic defects at birth.  Solar and wind energy can deliver cheap, clean energy in perpetuity.  Desalinization plants will make the Sahara bloom.  We'll invent our way out of every imaginable crisis, as the average behavior of the people gets worse and worse and worse and worse and worse.

We succumbed to socialism ages ago.  The whole world is post-socialism, post-totalitarianism, we are post 1984, post brave new world, post everything.  All the dystopias were right, it all happened just like they said -- and none of it mattered.  We just kept on anyway, thanks to technology!

We need a new dystopia to even discuss what the hell is going on here anymore.  Men and women hate each other and single adults outnumber married adults for the first time in species biological history.

Half of women are declaring themselves bisexual, half of men are going their own way.  The average American has exactly 1 close anybody in their lives.  http://www.businessinsider.com/emma-seppala-the-average-american-has-only-one-close-friend-2017-7?amp

No, I am not making this shit up.

There are good people in the world.  If there weren't, the trains wouldn't run on time, the supermarkets wouldn't have any food for sale, the electricity would turn off, and so on.  Obviously someone, somewhere, is acting responsibly and keeping everything together.  Simultaneously, our art features more and more great people worthy of admiration, adulation, even worship at an accelerating rate.  We have never had as bountiful good examples and true avatars of goodness in the world than art has given us today.  So there are people who know what good is, clearly, or they couldn't have represented it in our fiction.  And there are people doing good, obviously, or else we'd all have starved to death by now.  So where are they?  Why aren't they putting their feet down?  Why aren't they saying, enough is enough, we're founding a hidden city of the elves and sequestering our strength for our own sakes, the rest of you are on your own?

Have I just not been granted an invitation to the hidden city of the elves and it's already been made, and all the cool people are already living there, snickering at us?

How could such wonderful people as the artists and producers of today not choke on the evil vapors of the society around them, sicken of it, and rebel?  Why are they so flippant, so completely non-serious, so vapid that they think the world of today is okay, who think the status quo and 'better education' is the way to go?  Seriously?  That's the plan, folks?  Twenty years from now the next crop of kids will be better educated so I guess everything will turn out fine?

Where is the group of people designing a bio-weapon to take out everyone but themselves?  Where are the intrepid explorers readying an asteroid to devastate the Earth and wipe out all the losers they leave behind?

Where is the urgency?  Can't they see the toilet the masses have made of this world?  This beautiful blue-green paradise is just a pile of garbage, discarded needles and vomit thanks to other people.  Am I the only one who sees this?  Why are there 7 billion people on Earth, why will there be 14 billion by the end of the century, when everything would be so perfect with just 500 million????  Are you really saying every last beggar, vagrant and criminal we meet on the streets is indispensable to Earth's future?

Do we really need 14 billion losers who live by lies and logical fallacies mucking up everything?  30% of Japan's population lives in Tokyo.  Another 20% live in Osaka.  We could cleanse the entire rest of the Earth of all people and we'd barely lose a thing.  Two cities.  Two cities of hidden elves and we'd have about as good a world as what seven billion people are capable of today.

Where are the good people, what are they doing, and why won't they let me into their secret society?  Don't they have a plan to deal with all this shit?  Can't they see what's going on?
